Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of off-campus work authorization available to international students on an F-1 visa in the United States. It allows students to gain practical experience in their field of study through paid or unpaid internships, cooperative education programs, or other forms of training that are integral to their curriculum.

Key Features of CPT

  • Directly Related to Your Field of Study: The work must be closely tied to your major or program of study.
  • Part of Your Curriculum: CPT must be part of your academic program and either required or credited (such as a course or internship program).
  • Employment Authorization: CPT is authorized by the Designated School Official (DSO) at your university and does not require USCIS approval.
  • Full-Time or Part-Time Work:
    • Part-Time CPT: Up to 20 hours per week during the school term.
    • Full-Time CPT: Over 20 hours per week, typically allowed during school breaks or summer vacation.

How to Apply for CPT

Check Eligibility
  • You must have completed one full academic year in F-1 status (exceptions apply for graduate students whose program requires immediate training).
  • You must have a job offer related to your field of study before applying for CPT.
  • CPT must be a required or integral part of your academic program.
Talk to Your DSO
  • Meet with your Designated School Official (DSO) at your university’s International Student Office.
  • Discuss your eligibility and ensure your job offer aligns with your academic program.
Obtain a Job Offer Letter

Your employer must provide a formal offer letter that includes:

  • Your job title.
  • Job responsibilities.
  • Start and end dates of employment.
  • Work location.
  • Number of hours per week.
Enroll in an Eligible Course
  • Enroll in a course or academic program that requires practical training, such as an internship or co-op class.
  • Some programs may require you to earn academic credit for your CPT.
Submit CPT Request to Your DSO
  • Provide your job offer letter and proof of course enrollment to your DSO.
  • Your DSO will review your application and, if approved, update your SEVIS record with CPT authorization.
Receive an Updated Form I-20
  • Your DSO will issue a new Form I-20 with the CPT authorization details, including employer information and work dates.
  • You can only begin working on the start date listed on your Form I-20.

Key Points to Remember

No USCIS Application Required

CPT is authorized by your DSO, so you do not need to file Form I-765 with USCIS.

Work Authorization Is Employer-Specific

You can only work for the employer listed on your CPT authorization. If you change jobs, you’ll need to apply for a new CPT authorization.

Full-Time CPT and OPT

If you use 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you will lose eligibility for OPT. Part-time CPT does not affect your OPT eligibility.

CPT Is Time-Limited

CPT is only valid for the duration of your authorized employment period, as listed on your Form I-20.

Unpaid Internships

Even if the CPT job is unpaid, you still need authorization if the work is part of your academic program.
