What it is: The TOEFL test helps prove you have the English skills you will actually use in an academic classroom. During the test, you may read a passage from a textbook and listen to a lecture and then speak or write in response, just like you would in a classroom. TOEFL is a standardized test to judge one's English language abilities. It is reliable, fair, and accurately measures the 4 language skills — reading, listening, speaking, and writing — the way they're used in an academic environment.

1 Can I take the TOEFL iBT® Special Home Edition?
The at home testing option is available to anyone who meets the following requirements:The option is offered in your country or location. It's currently available everywhere that TOEFL iBT testing is normally available, except Mainland China and Iran.
Note: The ability to register for the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is dependent on the country name you enter in your ETS account, not your physical address or IP address. If the test is available in the country you enter, you'll see the "Special Home Edition" option as you begin registration. For example, if you select Mainland China, Iran, Chad, Fiji, etc., as your country in your ETS account, you won't see the at home testing option.
Your computer meets the equipment requirements for the test, including the installation of the ETS Test Browser and can pass the ProctorU Systems Check.
You have a room that provides an acceptable environment for the test.
2 How do I register?

Start your registration with ETS to purchase your test.
Complete your registration with ProctorU to choose a test date and time.
3 Is the test fee different for the at home test?
The test fee is the same and depends on where you plan to take the test. For more information, see TOEFL iBT Test Fees.
4 What test days and times are available?
Test times are available Sundays through Wednesdays, 24 hours a day. Appointments may be available as early as 24 hours after you register.
5 Will the at home option be available after December 31, 2020?
We are continuing to assess the situation to determine if additional test dates will be added.
6 The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is offered in my country. Does this mean my test center appointment will be canceled?
No. Test center closures are dependent on local conditions. The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is offered everywhere the TOEFL iBT test is normally offered, except Mainland China and Iran, to give you another option for safe, convenient testing. But as countries begin to reopen, their test centers are reopening as well, so you may be able to take your test in a test center as scheduled.If you have an upcoming test date, be sure to check your email and ETS account for any changes.
7 Can I use the TOEFL® Official App to register for the Special Home Edition?
No. You must register, reschedule or cancel via the website.
8 Are there accommodations for test takers with disabilities?
Yes. You can request the following accommodations via your ETS account before registering for an at home test:extended time

If you receive approval, you can then register via your ETS account.For all other approved accommodations, register through ETS Disability Services.
9 Can I use a voucher code to pay for my test?
Yes, you can use your voucher during checkout in your ETS account.
10 What are the ID requirements?
Your primary identification (ID) document should be a current, valid passport that shows your name, photograph and signature and is written in English-language letters.If you don't have a valid passport, see ID Requirements for the TOEFL Test.Note: ETS is temporarily accepting government-issued IDs with expiration dates from February 1, 2020, forward. All other ID policies still apply.
11 Can I retake the test?
Yes. There's no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but you can only take it once in a 3-day period.
Rescheduling or Canceling
1 Can I reschedule from a test center appointment to an at home test?
Yes. To do so, contact ETS.
2 Can I reschedule my at home test to another date?
Yes, you can reschedule free of charge through your ProctorU account any time prior to your appointment.
3 Can I reschedule my at home test to a physical test center?
No. Please contact ETS to discuss your options.
4 Can I cancel my at home test?
Yes. To do so, contact ETS. If you cancel your appointment no later than 4 days before your test date, you'll receive a refund equivalent to half of the original test fee.
Test Environment and Equipment
1 Where can I take the test?
You must have a private room with a desk or table where you'll take the test. Your desk or table must be cleared of all non-testing materials.
2 What type of devices (e.g., hand-held, tablet, laptop) can be used for testing?
You must use a laptop or desktop computer that meets the technical requirements. You can't use a phone or tablet.
3 Can I take the test on a Mac® computer?
Yes, if:Your computer has at least Mac OS X® 10.5. Note that it is recommended you use Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra.
You are using a Chrome™ or Firefox® browser.
The ETS Test Browser is installed.
It passes the ProctorU Systems Check.
4 Can I use scratch paper during my exam?
No. You may use an erasable marker with a small whiteboard or one blank piece of paper inside a transparency sheet during your exam. You'll be asked to erase all notes in view of the proctor at the end of the test.
Test Preparation
1 How do I prepare for the test?
Because the test content is the same, you can use the same test preparation material that you would use for the TOEFL iBT test.
2 How do I prepare my testing area?
Gather the materials you'll need for your test session.
Passport or other acceptable ID
Acceptable note taking materials, such as a whiteboard or plastic transparency sheet
Cellphone or hand-held mirror for check-in
Remove all other items from the area.
Make sure the area meets all environment requirements.
On Test Day
1 What should I wear for my test?
Your test session will be recorded, so dress comfortably and appropriately. Avoid wearing items such as tie clips, cuff links, ornate clips, combs, barrettes, headbands and other hair accessories.
2 What is the check-in process like?
This video offers a closer look at how to prepare your testing area, the check-in process and what you should expect during your at home test. The check-in process takes approximately 20 minutes.
3 Will I be monitored during my test session?
Yes. A human proctor will connect with you during check-in, verify your ID and monitor you throughout the entire session to make sure you're following all testing procedures. The proctor may be male or female.You will also be monitored by artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help ensure test security.
4 What if I need to speak with the proctor?
If you need to contact the proctor during your test, speak to get their attention or use the LogMeIn chat function. It may take 30–60 seconds for the proctor to reply.If the proctor is attempting to chat with you, the chat icon (a blue owl) will bounce up and down.
5 Will I have to submit a photo?
Your photo will be taken at the beginning of your test and included on your score report as part of your record to the institutions you designated to receive your scores.
6 Will I be recorded during my test?
Yes, you will be recorded during your entire test session.
7 Are there breaks during the test?
Yes, there is a 10-minute break after the Listening section, during which you may leave your seat. Be sure to return on time, or your test may be terminated by the proctor.Unscheduled breaks during the test aren't allowed, and will result in the termination of your test.
8 Will I be able to see my unofficial scores at the end of my test?
At the end of the test, you'll see your unofficial scores for the Reading and Listening sections. Then you'll be given the option to report or cancel your scores.
9 Can I wear a headset or earphones during my test?
No. You must use internal or external computer speakers.
Scores
1 Is scoring the same?
Yes. Because this is still a TOEFL iBT test, the scoring criteria, scoring process and score scale are exactly the same as a test taken at a test center. Scores can be accepted and used in the same way as the test center version.For more information, see TOEFL iBT Scores.
2 How and when do I get my scores?
Unofficial Scores: At the end of your test, you will see your unofficial scores for the Reading and Listening sections on the screen.Electronic Score Reporting: Your official scores will be available in your ETS account online or via the TOEFL Official App, approximately 6–10 days after you take the test.Paper Score Reporting: If you requested a paper copy of your score report before you took the test, it will be mailed within 11 days after your test date. Delivery times will vary based on local postal services.
3 Will it show on my score report that I took the test at home?
Yes. The Test Center field on the score report will indicate Special Home Edition.
4 How do I send my scores to an institution?
As with a test at a test center, you can send your scores to as many as 4 institutions or agencies at no additional cost. You'll select your free score recipients in your ETS account when you begin your registration.For more information, see Sending Your TOEFL iBT Test Scores.
5 Will colleges and universities accept my Special Home Edition scores?
Because this is still a TOEFL iBT test, scores can be accepted and used in the same way as the test center version, and we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback about the use of Special Home Edition scores from thousands of universities worldwide. 1 How does the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition compare with other English proficiency tests that can be taken from home?
Before you choose an at home English proficiency test, make sure it meets the quality and security standards required for acceptance by the universities to which you'll apply. The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition:
- is identical in content, format, on-screen experience and scoring to the trusted TOEFL iBT test taken at a test center
- has a strong level of security comparable to the TOEFL iBT test taken in a test center because there are live, remote proctors for real-time human monitoring, in addition to best-in-class AI technology
As a result, universities can be confident in the scores they receive from the home edition of the TOEFL iBT test. Other tests offered at home without these security features may or may not be accepted by institutions.
