About New Zealand

New Zealand (Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. More than 700 tiny islands make up its two main landmasses, Te Waipounamu (the South Island) and Te Ika-a-Māui (the North Island). Nestled south of the islands of Fiji, Tonga, and New Caledonia, and east of Australia across the Tasman Sea, this island nation is the 6th largest in terms of land area. Volcanic eruptions and tectonic uplift are largely responsible for the nation’s stark mountain peaks and diverse geography, which includes the Southern Alps. Auckland is the most populated city in New Zealand, while Wellington serves as the country’s capital.

With an advanced market economy, New Zealand was placed fourth in the 2022 Index of Economic Freedom and 13th in the Human Development Index in 2022. With a nominal GDP per capita of US$36,254, it is a high-income economy. The currency is the New Zealand dollar, commonly referred to as the “Kiwi dollar” colloquially; it is also accepted in Niue, Tokelau, the Cook Islands (see Cook Islands dollar), and the Pitcairn Islands.

What is the Green List and what does it mean for migrants and employers?

The Green List will make it easier for firms to hire and attract migrants for high-skilled, hard-to-fill occupations, while also providing eligible persons with assured residence pathways. Not many highly skilled jobs that are in great demand worldwide and continue to be in short supply in New Zealand are on the Green List. For additional information, see the Immigration New Zealand website. These positions will require registration, certification, or experience.

How can you Apply for Residence under the Skilled Migrant Category?

The Skilled Migrant Category has a complicated application process. There are two primary phases to it: The Expression of Interest stage, where you can claim points for your case before submitting it to Immigration New Zealand. Points are tallied and grouped into a pool based on point ranking. The Expressions of Interest with the highest point totals from the Pool are chosen every two weeks by Immigration New Zealand. This procedure is known as selection. Following selection, the real application process for a resident visa can start.

What if my Visa Has Been Declined?

If Immigration New Zealand rejects your visa application, you could be deported or face a difficult visa status. You may choose to file an appeal if you would like the decision to deny your visa application to be reviewed by another body. Appeals against deportation and visa judgements are handled by the Immigration and Protection Tribunal (IPT).

Why does my qualification/occupation require New Zealand assessment?

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority specifies that assessments be conducted for a few universities and nations in order to establish the appropriate level of study in New Zealand.
